Modern slavery refers to a range of exploitative practices where individuals are coerced, deceived, or forced into situations where they are controlled and exploited for someone else's gain. It encompasses human trafficking, forced labour, debt bondage, prostitution, domestic servitude, and criminal exploitation, such as drug trafficking or "county lines" drug operations. Victims are often subjected to threats, violence, or other forms of coercion, and may be unable to leave their circumstances due to fear, debt, or lack of personal documents. Migrants with insecure accommodation or immigration status are particularly vulnerable.
In 2021 it was reported that of 137 people Cambridgeshire Constabulary reported as being at risk from such exploitation 71 were children.
